Best answer

Because,

(a) 35

Let the required number be x

Now,

= x + 20% of x = 42

= [x + {(20/100) × x}] = 42

= [x + {20x/100}] = 42

= [x + {x/5}] = 42

= [(5x + x)/5] = 42

= [6x/5] = 42

= x = (42 ×5)/6

= x = (7 × 5)

= x = 35
