Kadambini is a widow in the house of Saradsankar, the Ranihat zamindar. The child of her brother-in-law Saradsankar is her darling. She has fostered him. The child calls her ‘Auntie, Auntie”. For some reason her heart stops beating. She is taken to funeral ground. In fact she is not dead. It has been because of heart beating. When she reaches her friend’s house, she is considered a ghost. She returns to her in-law’s house. All the members of the family are afraid of her. Even the child asks her to go away. At last she falls into a well and dies.
कादम्बिनी, रानीहट के जमींदार शारदाशंकर के घर में एक विधवा है। उसके देवर, शारदाशंकर का बच्चा, उसका लाडला है। उसने उसका पालन-पोषण किया है। बच्चा उसे चाची-चाची’ पुकारता है। किसी कारणवश कादम्बिनी के हृदय की धड़कन बन्द हो जाती है। उसको अन्तिम संस्कार के स्थान पर ले जाया जाता है। वास्तव में, वह मरी नहीं है। ऐसा हृदय की धड़कन के कारण हुआ है। जब वह अपनी सहेली के घर पहुँचती है, उसे एक भूत माना जाता है। वह वापिस अपने ससुराल आ जाती है। घर के सभी सदस्य उससे डरते हैं। यहाँ तक कि बच्चा भी उसे चले जाने के लिए कहता है। अन्त में वह एक कुएँ में गिर जाती है तथा मर जाती है।
