How do mechanical waves differ from electromagnetic waves?

Mechanical waves: 

1. Mechanical waves need a material medium for their propagation. 

2. These waves cannot travel through a vacuum. 

3. The speed of the mechanical wave is low, depends/upon the source and medium through which they travel. 

4. Mechanical waves may be longitudinal or transverse waves. 

5. Mechanical waves are formed due to the vibrations of the particle of the medium. 

Electromagnetic waves: 

1. Electromagnetic waves do not need any material medium for their propagation. 

2. They travel through a vaccum. 

3. They travel with the speed of light (3 x 108 m/s) in vaccum. 

4. Electromagnetic waves are transverse waves. 

5. Electromagnetic waves are formed due to the oscillating electrical and magnetic field.
