It would be better to know what a simile is, first of all. A simile is a figure of speech in which explicit comparison is made between two essential dissimilar things, actions or feelings. This is done by the use of words such as like’ or as’. For example, the writer compares the book with a guest.

Following are the similes used in the lesson:

  1. A borrowed book is like a guest in the house.
  2. ……. it is like visiting a forest where you once blazed a trail.
  3. There are of course no friends like living, breathing, corporeal men and women.
  4. You are necessary to them as an audience is to an actor.

In the first sentence the book is like a guest where the book and guest are two different things. But how we behave with them is mentioned in this simile. In the second simile referring a book is like visiting a forest. It is mentioned about those books where you do not mark the important passage or saying. You cannot locate the thing quickly. In the third sentence the books are compared to living things like men and women. And the last comparison is made between the reader and the audience.
