When an investigator collects data himself with a definite plan or design in his/her mind is called primary data.

Data which are not originally collected rather obtained from published or unpublished source are known as secondary data.

Primary Data Secondary Data
1. Primary data are original and just take raw material for statistical method. 1. Secondary data are like finished product because these have undergone once through statistical treatment.
2. These data are collected by the investigator himself. 2. Secondary data were collected and published earlier by some one.
3. These data are collected afresh according to independent plan. 3. These data already exist, i.e. can be available in report, record, etc.
