Characteristics of the Indian Constitution :
1. Written Constitution : It took 2 years 11 months and 18 days to prepare the Constitution.
2. Sovereignty : Sovereign power lies with the people of India. The Constitution has been made by the people, for the people and dedicated to the people of India. Thus, the supreme power is vested in the people.
3. Federalism : Under this, the Constitution divides the powers between the Centre and the States through three lists:
1. Union list,
2. States list,
3. Concurrent list.
Separation of Powers : The three organs of the state are the Legislature, the Executive and the Judiciary.
1. The Legislature has the power to make laws.
2. The Executive has the power to execute laws.
3. The Judiciary has the power to judge and apply punishment when laws are violated.
