1. Red and yellow soils develop on crystalline igneous rocks in areas of low rainfall in the eastern and southern parts of the Deccan Plateau.
2. They are also found in parts of Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Southern parts of the middle Ganga plain and along the predmont zone of the Western Ghats.
3. They develop a red colour due to diffusion of iron in crystalline and metamorphic rocks.
4. They look yellow in hydrated form.
5. They are poor in lime, nitrogen and humus.
6. They are used in cultivation of millets, pulses, linseed and tobacco
