dam is a hydraulic structure of fairly impervious material built across a river to create a reservoir on its upstream side for impounding water for various purposes. A dam and a reservoir are complements of each other.

A hydraulic dam or simply dam is a barrier across flowing water in order to create a reservoir, to conserve water as well as use it for other industrial as well as domestic purposes.
