Energy of electron present in nth orbital of an atom with atomic number Z is given by

En= -(2π2Z2me4)/(n2h2)

When an electron (e) is infinite distance from nucleus it has zero interaction with nucleus. As it approaches to nucleus it interacts with nucleus it does some work and releases some energy. Thus the energy of the electron decreases and becomes negative.
