Placenta is a special tissue that helps human embryo in obtaining nutrition from mother's blood.
Structure: This is a disc which is embedded in the uterine wall which contains villi on the embryo side of the tissue, and on the mother's side are blood spaces which surround the villi.
Function: It helps in nourishment of the embryo. It helps in exchange of gases by providing O2 and removal of CO2 from the foetus. It is also involved in removal of wastes generated by embryo through the placenta.
