3x + 5y = -7; x + 4y = -14 

The matrix equation of the system is

Number of non-zero rows is 2 

So ρ(A) = ρ([A, B]) = 2 

Now the new matrix equation is 

-7y = 35 ⇒ y = -5 

x + 4y = -14 ⇒ x = -14 – 4(-5) = 6 

Solution is (6, -5)
