(π/2) < cos-1 (3x -1) < π 

⇒ cos (π/2) < 3x – 1 < cos π 

⇒ 0 < 3x – 1 < -1 

⇒ 1 < 3x < 0 

⇒ (1/3) < x < 0 

This inequality holds only if x < 0 or x > (1/3)
