Given, y = |x|

If y = x

x 0 1 2
y 0 1 2

If y = -x

x 0 -1 -2
y 0 1 2

(i) y = |x – 1| + 1

y = x – 1 + 1

y = -x + 1 + 1 = x

x -1 0 1
y 3 2 1

(For y = 2 - x)

(ii) y = |x + 1| – 1

y = x + 1 – 1 = x

y = -x - 1 – 1

y = -x – 2

y = – (x + 2)

x 0 1 2
y -2 -3 4

(iii) y = |x + 2| – 3

y = x + 2 – 3 ⇒ x – 1

y = -x – 2 + 3 = 1 – x

y = -(x – 1)

x 0 1 2 3
y 1 0 -1 -2
