The "recital of the last interview" refers to Lakshmi Das' conversation with Ali, when Ali had asked him to promise to put his daughter's letter on his grave. When the postmaster saw Ali's soul in front of him and after knowing that the latter is dead, he was taken aback. This was the time when Lakshmi Das told him about his last conversation with Ali.
