What is oxidative decarboxylation? What happens to pyruvate immediately after this reaction? Name the enzyme involved in this reaction.

  • Oxidative decarboxylation is the process in which pyruvate is first decarboxylated (removal of carbon) and then oxidised in the presence of NAD+ and enzyme pyruvic dehydrogenase.
  • Pyruvic acid is converted into 2C-acetate.
  • The enzyme is pyruvic dehydrogenase.
