Water is kept in an earthen pot (matka) during summer. Why is it so?

An earthen pot contains tiny holes. The particles present in the water surface acquire energy from the surroundings and get converted into vapour (The process involved is evaporation). The vapours escape through these tiny holes producing a cooling effect to the water inside the pot.
