Being an organic molecule, carbon acts as a key element of nucleic acids. Carbon atoms appear in the sugar of the nucleic acid backbone, and the nitrogenous bases. Carbon dioxide consists of a carbon atom covalently double bonded to two oxygen atoms. Carbon dioxide is soluble in water, in which it readily and reversibly converts to carbonic acid. The conjugate bases of carbonic acid are known as bicarbonate and carbonate ions.
