Roots of trees hold the soil tight and firm and thus prevents it from getting eroded by any natural or man-made calamity.

 However, deforestation and overgrazing both lead to the removal of plants hence they increase the erosion of soil. Excessive use of fertilizers makes soil barren and plants will no longer grow on it, ultimately leading to soil erosion.
