Nitrogen fixation is done by nitrogen-fixing bacteria. these bacteria possess this property because of the presence of an enzyme called " Nitrogenase". Nitrogenase activity is dropped down in the presence of oxygen because of alterations in its structure and thus nitrogen fixation occurs anaerobically.
