The trait are present on a single long thread of DNA, but as separate independent pieces, each called as chromosome. Thus each cell have two copies of each chromosome, one from male and female parent. It was observed that when two pairs of trait or characters were considered, each trait expressed itself independent of the other. Thus, Mendel was able to propose the law of independent assortment which says about independent inheritance of trait.
