Three resistances are connected in an electrical circuit as shown in the circuit diagram. Determine the potential difference across resistance R2 .

For series connection, the effective resistance

RS = R1 + R2 + R3 

= 1 + 2 + 3 = 6Ω

Total potential = 12V 

Amount of current flowing through the circuit

I =\(\frac{V}{R_S} = \frac{12V}{6Ω}\)= 2A

Potential difference across resistance R2

V = I × R2 

= 2 × 2 = 4V 

The potential difference across the resistance R2 = 4 V
