In graphite, each carbon is covalently bonded to 3 other carbon atoms in a hexagonal arrangement. That is 3 out of 4 valence electrons are used for covalent bonding. The remaining 1 electron from each carbon atom is free (or delocalized). This free electron helps in the conduction of electricity.
