The average age of a father and his two sons is 27 years. Five years ago, the average age of the two sons was 12 years. If the difference between the ages of two sons is 4 years, then the present age of the father is 

(a) 34 years 

(b) 47 years

Answer is: (b) 47 years.

Let the ages of father and his two sons be x, y and z years respectively. 

Given, x + y + z = 3 × 27 = 81      … (i) 

and (y – 5) + (z – 5) = 2 × 12 ⇒ y + z = 34   … (ii) 

From (i) and (ii) 

Age of father (x) = 81 – 34 = 47 years.
