In a test, the marks obtained by 15 students are 34, 37, 44, 39, 45, 46, 35, 42, 48, 40, 39, 33, 43, 47, 44. The probability that a pupil chosen at random passed the test, if the passing marks are 40 is:

(a) \(\frac{8}{15}\)

(b) \(\frac{3}{5}\)

(c) \(\frac{7}{15}\)

(d) \(\frac{11}{15}\)

Best answer

(b) \(\frac{3}{5}\)

Number of students getting marks equal to or more than 40 = 9 (44, 45, 46, 42, 48, 40, 43, 47, 44)

\(\therefore\) P(pass) = \(\frac{Number\,of\,students\,who\,passed}{Total\,number\,of\,students}\)

\(\frac{9}{15}\) = \(\frac{3}{5}\)
