If 3x – y = 27 and 3x + y = 243, then what is the value of x?

Given, 3x – y = 27 = 33 and 3x + y = 243 = 35 

⇒  x – y = 3     ... (i) 

x + y = 5        ... (ii) 

Adding equations (i) and (ii), we get 

2x = 8 ⇒ x = 4
