The population of a town is 53,000. If in a year the number of males was to increase by 6% and that of the females by 4%, the population will grow to 55,630. Find the difference between the number of males and females in the town at present.

Let the number of females be x and males be y. Then

x + y = 53000

1.04x + 1.06y = 55630

Now we can solve for x and y and find the difference.
