Imbibition is the diffusion of water along a gradient into an adsorbent. 

Two conditions necessary for imbibition are: 

(i) Water potential gradient between the surface of the adsorbent and the liquid imbibed. 

(ii) Affinity between the adsorbent and the imbibed liquid.
