Best answer

Hybridisation of BeCl2 in gaseous state

In gaseous state, BeCI2 exists as linear molecule, (CI − Be − CI). It has hybridisation.

CI − Be − CI

Structure of BeCI2

In gaseous state

Hybridisation of BeCl2 in solid state –

Be in the excited state with the configuration 1s2 , 2s12px12py02pz0 undergoes sp3 hybridisation. Two half-filled hybrid orbitals will form normal covalent bond with two CI-atoms. The other two CI- atoms are coordinated to Be-atom by donating electron pairs into the empty hybrid orbitals.
