Best answer

Standing or stationary wave results when two progressive waves of same wavelength and amplitude travelling with same speed in opposite direction superpose.

Characteristics:

(a) Energy is not transferred from particle to particle.

(b) Amplitude of vibration of particles is maximum at antinode and minimum (say zero) at nodes.

(c) Time period of all particles is same except at nodes.

(d) Wavelength and frequency of standing wave is same as that of the component wave.

(e) Pressure variation is minimum at antinode and maximum at nodes.
