How is insertional inactivation of an enzyme used as a selectable marker to differentiate recombinants from non-recombinants?

When a recombinant DNA is inserted within the coding sequence of an enzyme βgalactosidase, it results into inactivation of the enzyme. The bacterial colonies having inserted plasmid, show no colouration while those without inserted plasmid show blue colour.
