Our Constitution came into effect on 26th January 1950. Thus India becomes a republic on that day. As per the Constitution, the first general election in the country took place in 1951-52. The independent and impartial election was a great success of Indian democracy even though several Asian and African countries, attained independence along with India deviated from the democratic values. India still remains to be a strong democratic country. This is just because our Constitution is simply the custodian of our democracy.
