Fewer individuals of a species in a population will face reproductive isolation. So, they would impose extensive inbreeding among them, due to which no exchange of genes take place. This limits the appearance of variations and put the species at a disadvantage. It there are changes in the environment, the individuals would fail to cope up with the environmental changes, and thus face a greater threat of extinction.
