Why does that splitting of spectral lines occur when the source of the spectrum is placed in a magnetic field ?

The splitting of the spectral lines known as Zeeman effect is an account of the reason that each sub shell has a number of orbitals. They acquire different orientations when the source giving the spectrum is placed under the influence of a strong magnetic field. These orientations correspond to different spectral lines.
