एसिटेट आयन के जल-अपघटन के कारण, विलयन में, `[OH^(-)]` मान बढ़ जाता है। अतः pH का मान 7 से अधिक होगा तथा लिटमस का रंग क्षारीय माध्यम में नीला हो जायेगा।
