Riemer-Tiemann reaction intorduces an aldehyde group, on to the aromatic ring of phenol, ortho to the hydroxyl group. This reaction involves electrophilic aromatic substitution. This is a general method for the synthesis of substitued salicyladehydes as depicted below.
