Microbes in industrial vitamin production.

(1) Vitamins are nitrogenous organic compounds, required in minute quantities for normal growth and development of the body.

(2) The microbes are involved in the industrial production of vitamins like thiamine (vitamin B , riboflavin (vitamin B ), pyridoxine, folic acid, pantothenic acid, biotin, vitamin B , ascorbic acid (Vitamin C), beta-carotene (provitamin A) and ergosterol (provitamin D). 

(3) Examples of some vitamins produced by fermetaion using different microbial sources are

  • Vitamin B2 – Neurospora gossypii, Eremothecium ashbyi 
  • Vitamin B12 – Pseudomonas denitrijicans 
  • Vitamin C – Aspergillus niger
