Consider a small surface area of 1 mm2 at the top of a mercury drop of radius 4.0 mm. Find the force exerted on this area (a) by the air above it (b) by the mercury below it and (c) by the mercury surface in contact with it. Atmospheric pressure `=1.0x10^5Pa` and surface tension of mercuru `=0.465Nm^-1.` Neglect the effect fo gravity. Assume all numbers to be exact.

Correct Answer - A::B::C
`A=1mm^2=10^-m^2`
`r=4mm` ltbr.gt `=4x10^-3m`
`P_0=10xx10^5P_a` Atmospheric pressure
`T=0.465N/m`
`a. F=P_0A`
`=1.0xx10^5xx10^-6=10^-1`
`=0.1N`
a. `F=P_0A`
`=1.0x10^5xx10^-6=10^-1`
`=0.1N`
b. Pressure `=P_0+((2T)/r)`
`P=P_0=((2T)/r)`
`F=p^1A=(P_0+(2T)/r)A`
`=0.1+(2x0.465)/(4xx10^-3)xx10^-6)`
`=0.1+00023=0.10023N`
c. `P=(2T)/r`
`F=PA=(2T)/rA`
`=2xx(0.465)/(4x10^-3)xx10^-6=.00023`
