Explain the structure of carboxyl group.

In carboxyl group, the carboxyl carbon is sp2 - hybridised and the bonds to the carboxyl carbon lie in one plane. 

The C-C = O and O = C-O bond angles are 120°. 

The carboxylic carbon is less electrophilic than carbonyl carbon because of the resonance structures shown below :
