Some strains of Bacillus thuringiensis produce proteins that kilI insects (pests), these crystals contain a toxic insecticidal protein, once the insect ingests this (inactive) toxin it is converted into an active form, due to alkaline pH of the gut, activated toxin binds to surface of midgut epithelial cells and creates pores, causing swelling and lysis leading to death of pest.
