Alexander von Humbolt was a great German naturalist and geographer. He did extensive explorations in the wilderness of South American forests, He established a species-area relationship. He observed that with rn a region, species richness increase with increasing explored area, but up to a certain limit. In fact, the relationship between species richness and area for a variety of taxa turns out to be a rectangular hyperbola as shown in figure below.
