Carboxylic acids having an `alpha-` hydrogen are halogenated at the `alpha`- position on treatement with chlorine or bromine in the presence of small amunt of red phosphorus to give `alpha`-halocarboxylic acids. The reaction is know as Hell- Volhard-Zelinsky reaction.
