(b) Enthalpy of atomisation may be defined as the amount of heat energy needed to break the metal lattice of a crystalline metal into free atoms. Greater the magnitude of lattice energy, more will be the value of enthalpy of atomisation. The transition metals have high enthalpies of atomisation because teh metallic bonds present are quite strong due to presence of large number of half-filled atomic orbitals.
