Four resistors, R1, R2, R3, and R4, are connected in the circuit diagram above. When the switch is closed, current flows in the circuit. If no current flows through the ammeter when it is connected as shown, what would be the value of R3?

 The correct option is: (D)

Explanation:

For no current to flow, the potential drop across R1 must equal the potential drop across R2. For this to occur I1R1 = I2R2. Since the two branches also have the same potential difference as a whole (they are in parallel) we also have I1(R1 + R3) = I2(R2 + R4). Solve for R3 .
