Correct Answer - Option 3 : identifying the areas of difficulty

The teaching-learning process is aimed to bring permanent change in the behaviour of an individual (knowledge, skill, and attitude) that can be acquired consciously. It involves planning and execution of several activities and experiences to bring the desired outcomes. If the outcomes are not achieved as per expectations or much lower than that it is considered as the "failure" of the system.

While dealing with slow learners who are learning at different paces and levels. Teachers can follow different methods of instruction as described below:

  • Differentiated method:
    • It is a teaching method where the instructors tailor their lessons to meet individual needs.
    • Differentiation consists of the efforts of the instructors to respond to variance among learners in the classroom.
    • Teachers can differentiate elements based on –
      • Content – What the learners need to learn or how to the student will get access to the information.
      • Process – activities in which the learners engage in order to make sense of the content.
      • Products – Culminating assignments that help the learners to rehearse, extend and apply the learning that has taken place.
  • Mastery Learning:
    • The teacher here can combine the five elements of mastery learning to remediate the learners as:
      • Pre-assessment – It helps teachers to identify the learners’ prior knowledge, skills, and experiences. It helps the teachers to focus attention on learning targets and clear misconceptions.
      • Group–based initial instruction - Although mastery-based approaches focus on personalized learning, the initial instruction is usually not done exclusively for each student.
      • Regular formative assessment – It helps teachers to categorize learners.
      • Corrective instruction - corrective instruction approaches are versatile enough to accommodate different student learning styles, modalities, and intelligence levels. It is different from re-teaching.
      • Enrichment Activities - For the students who have mastered the learning material teachers aim to provide challenging yet rewarding learning experiences.

Hence, Slow learners fail to grasp effectively and mix up words and structures easily. Teachers can remediate by beginning with identifying the areas of difficulty.

  • After the teacher has identified the areas of difficulty the teacher can Set drills for practice, can focus on peer learning.
  • After each content prepare, a summary of the items learned.
  • It is important to note that the tasks can be set only after identifying the difficulties.
