Statement (I): If a centrifugal governor is stable at a particular position, it would be stable at all other positions in the working range of operation.

Statement (II): Porter governor is a stable governor throughout its range of operation.

1. Both statement (I) and statement (II) are individually true and Statement (II) is the correct explanation of Statement (I)
2. Both statement (I) and statement (II) are individually true and Statement (II) is NOT the correct explanation of Statement (I)

Correct Answer - Option 2 : Both statement (I) and statement (II) are individually true and Statement (II) is NOT the correct explanation of Statement (I)

Concept:

Stability of the Governor:

A governor is said to be stable when for every speed within the working range, there is a definite configuration i.e. there is only one radius of rotation of the governor balls at which the governor is in equilibrium. For the governor to be stable, the controlling force must increase as the radius of rotation increases i.e., for a stable governor, if the equilibrium speed increases, the radius of governor balls must also increase.

Explanation:

Statement (I):

Centrifugal governor is stable at a particular position. So, for every speed within the working range, there will be a definite configuration, so it would be stable at all other positions in the working range of operation.

Statement (II):

Porter governor is a stable governor throughout its range of operation as for every speed within the range, there will be only one configuration.
