Concept:

  • Distances between two nucleons (protons and neutrons) in the nucleus of an atom are under the range of 10 -15 m.

1 Fermi = 10 -15 m

Explanation:

  • Since two nucleons are at an average distance of 10 -15 m, we can say that it will be comfortable to use the unit of measuring distances is fermi.

  • 1 millimeter = 10 -3 m
  • 1 micrometer = 10 -6 m
  • 1 Angstrom = 10 -10  m
  • Nuclear Force act between Nucleons when the distance between them is in the range of fermi (10 -15 m).
  • The force is short-ranged and strong enough to overcome the electrostatic force between two protons in the nucleus. 
  • If the distance is more than fermi, then electrostatic force becomes stronger.
