Correct Answer - Option 2 : Zig-zag motion

In Brownian motion, the movement of the small particles in a liquid or gas is zig-zag motion.

  • Brownian motion is the spontaneous motion of particles suspended in a fluid (a liquid or a gas) as a result of their collision with the molecules in the fluid that travel quickly.
  • Typically this pattern of motion alternates random fluctuations in the position of a particle within a fluid subdomain with a relocation to another subdomain.
  • This pattern describes a thermal equilibrium fluid which is described by a given temperature. There is no preferred direction of flow within such fluid as in transportation phenomena.
  • This motion is named after the botanist Robert Brown, who first identified the phenomenon in 1827 when seeing Clarkia pulchella plant pollen submerged in water through a microscope.
