  • Bezwada Wilson is one of the founders of Safai Karmachari Andolan.
    • Safai Karamchari means a person engaged in, or employed for, manually carrying human excreta or any sanitation work; (f) Vice-Chairperson means the Vice-Chairperson of the Commission.
    • Safai Karmachari Andolan is a movement that aims to completely eradicate manual scavenging from India.
    • The movement began with the efforts of the youth from the community, led by Bezwada Wilson, who was born into a family of manual scavengers and had seen the injustices meted out to them all his life.
    • The Safai Karamchari Andolan filed a PIL in 2003. In their petition, they complained that manual scavenging still existed and it continued in government undertakings like the railways. They sought enforcement of their Fundamental Rights.

  • In 1994, Bezwada helped found Safai Karmachari Andolan (SKA) along with S. R. Sankaran and Paul Diwakar.
  • SKA's goal is to end the practice of manual scavenging and help those engaged in it find dignified work. SKA trains teams to work towards the elimination of manual scavenging in various Indian states.
  • In 2009, Bezwada was elected an Ashoka Senior Fellow for human rights.
