  • As per Census 2011,  24 percentage (rounded off to nearest integer) of ST households have walls made of burnt bricks or concrete. 
    • The Indian Census has a rich tradition and enjoys the reputation of being one of the best in the world. The first Census in India was conducted in the year 1872.
    • The Census of India 2011 will be conducted in two phases:
      • House listing and Housing Census.
      • Population Enumeration.
    • The first phase of the Census will be conducted in the period April to September 2010 in different States/Union Territories depending upon local conditions.
    • The fieldwork of the second phase (Population Enumeration) will be carried out during February-March, 2011.

  • Nine types of housing units were defined in the Census:
    • Detached house, semidetached/townhouse, apartment/ flat, guest flat, part commercial/industrial, mobile home (caravan, tent), single quarters, traditional dwelling, and improvised housing unit (shack).
    • 31 percent of the households resided in dwellings with walls made from mud/clay/bricks in Ohangwena Region.
    • About 42 percent of urban households used cement/bricks for outer walls compared to 19.8 percent used for rural households.
    • Rural households’ walls were mainly made of mud/clay/bricks (34.6%) and wood/poles/sticks/grass/reeds (33.3%).
    • At the constituency level, households with walls constructed from cement blocks/bricks/stones were most common in the Ohangwena constituency (40.9%).
