  • ​The Indian National Congress on 19 December 1929, passed 'Purna Swaraj' at its Lahore session.
  • Jawaharlal Nehru was the president of the Indian National Congress during the Lahore session.
  • Jawaharlal Nehru hoisted the national flag of India on 31 December 1929 on the banks of the Ravi river as a part of 'Purna Swaraj'.
  • A public declaration on 'Purna Swaraj' was made by Congress on 26 January 1930.
  • Congress asked the people of India to observe the 26th of January as Independence Day since 1930 (later it changes and made 15th August as the official Independence Day.)
  • The declaration of 'Purna Swaraj' was passed due to the breakdown of negotiations between Indian Freedom Fighters and the British government over the question of dominion status for India.
  • To commemorate the 1930 declaration India decided to celebrate January 26 as Republic day.
  • Lord Irwin was the viceroy of India during the declaration of 'Purna Swaraj'.
